Any grandparent’s nightmare is that their grandchildren won’t want to visit them. For this poor grandfather, that nightmare has come true. The one granddaughter that did show up, took the crisis to Twitter and the users were surprisingly supportive. Check it out!
A heartbreaking image of a loving grandfather has left the internet in floods of tears, after his granddaughter revealed her ‘Papaw’ had cooked up a feast for all six of his grandchildren, only for all but one to reject his dinner invitation.
The image, which was shared by Oklahoma-based college student Kelsey Harmon, sees her grandfather sitting at a table decorated with a tartan tablecloth, looking down at his burger – which was one of 12 he had made that night in anticipation of spending the evening with his family.
But, as Kelsey revealed in her tweet, her Papaw was left devastated when she was the only one of the six grandkids to turn up to his dinner.
Accompanying the picture, posted to her Twitter account, Kelsey wrote: ‘Dinner with papaw tonight… He made 12 burgers for all six grandkids and I’m the only one who showed. love him [sic].’
Since the college softball player shared the picture on her account, it has prompted an incredible outpouring of support – and emotion – from other social media users around the world, many of whom have asked Kelsey to send their messages of love to her Papaw.
‘I know I don’t know you or papaw but can you tell him that we (the internet) love him?’ one person wrote in reply to Kelsey’s tweet.
Indeed, the incredible response has seen the original post be retweeted by more than 84,000 people and favorited nearly 150,000 times within 24 hours of being posted, prompting numerous mimes and responses.
Papaw’s image has even been Photoshopped onto the cover of Drake’s album cover for Take Care.
It also appears to have driven people to extreme measures with Kelsey later being forced to tell people to stop sending her cousins death threats.
She wrote: ‘Papaw is ok guys I promise & he loves all grandkids equally, plz stop sending my cousins death threats everything is ok !!!! [sic]’.
Responding with a mixture of sadness, anger and outrage, Kelsey has been inundated with messages.
She wrote: ‘Guys I’m sorry if I don’t tweet back I’m literally getting 20+ notifications every 30 seconds & can’t see half of them ily guys [sic]’.
Kimberley Hendry wrote: ‘I need to know more! Did the grandkids apologise? What happened to the rest of Paw Paw’s burgers? Is he okay? I need to know’.
Another user, tweeting under the name Noor Loves Zayn, wrote: ‘Now he has 45.9K new grandchildren who would love to have a burger with him im in tears this made me so sad imcrying’.
Shades of JD & DJ wrote: ‘Please tell him that more tan 15k people whants to eat hamburguers with him. Big hugs for you two [sic]’.
And it seems that the viral impact Kelsey’s post has had, really helped to provide her cousins with some life perspective.
On Thursday afternoon, her cousin Brock took to Twitter to let the world know that he went and enjoyed a burger with his Papaw, in the hopes of making up for letting him down when he failed to show up for the original dinner.
‘Guys don’t worry!’ Brock tweeted alongside an image of his grandfather tucking into yet another burger. ‘I came to Papaw’s house and am having a burger!’
He later added: “Papaw said he forgives me and wants all of you guys to know that y’all are awesome for making him famous,’ before adding several ‘ok’ sign emojis.
‘I asked PaPaw what it felt like being the coolest grandpa in the world and he said its nothing new that he’s been the coolest one for a while.’
This is so sad!
